Pizza originally comes from Italy however nowadays it has international appeal. Pizza is loved by people all around the world; it’s not just popular in Italy anymore! It’s a very popular food which is actually pretty simple if you think about it. It is made using tomato sauce and cheese on bread.

While the basic ingredients used in pizza are bread, sauce and cheese they combine to make something truly amazing. Wonderful toppings can be added to create something very special, and the toppings can include pineapple, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, and pepperoni among many others. The toppings that you choose will depend mainly on your personal tastes and preferences.

Origins of Pizza

Pizza is actually nothing new; the food itself can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Similar foods to pizzas were eaten at this time, the Ancient Greeks used to put various toppings on their bread, including olive oil, herbs and cheese.

The Romans also had a similar food which consisted of bread with cheese and herbs on top. The pizza as we know it today came from Italy and this was the first time that tomato and cheese were used together during the late 19 century to create this wonderful food.

There is an ancient legend that King Ferdinand I loved pizza so much that he snuck out of the palace and into a poor neighborhood just to eat the food that was not allowed in the court. Pizza has a great reputation and is very popular with rich and poor alike.

There are loads of different types of pizzas. Pizzas have been around for a very long time and this means that every country has offered something and changed the pizza in some way. It has been inspired by lots of different people to create a unique and amazing food.

Although there are lots of diverse types of pizza, there are actually only three types of pizza which are officially considered as a pizza. These types include:

  • Margherita - This is a very delicious pizza which is made using olive oil, basil, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes.
  • Marinara - This type of pizza is made using oregano, olive oil, tomato and lots of garlic. This is an old fashioned type of pizza which is still very popular in Italy.
  • Margherita Extra - This is a slightly different type of a marherita pizza. It's made with extra special mozzarella from Campania.

Pizzas in Italy might have to be restrained by the guidelines above, however throughout the world there are lots of other variations. For example:

  • India - Pizza is very popular in India and it has become one of the most popular types of fast food in the country. There are lots of pizza shops which sell pizzas with Indian toppings. The popular toppings in India include Tandoori chicken, friend paneer and lamb roganjosh. Many of the pizzas in India are much spicier than other types due to local tastes.
  • Brazil - Pizza was brought to Brazil by Italians; it started as nothing more than a novelty but grew into something much more important. There are hundreds of pizza restaurants throughout the country. Pizza is popular with the whole country and not just the Italian immigrants anymore.
  • Australia - Quite a large proportion of the Australian population is descended from Italians. For this reason pizza is very popular in Australia. All of the popular Italian versions of pizzas are available in Australia although there are also lots of other types. An Australian pizza can have egg and bacon on it. Sometimes fried prawns may be found on Australian pizzas.

Pizza is continuing to take the world by storm and has become one of the most popular foods in the world at the moment. Because of the worldwide phenomenon there are many different types and tastes of pizza available.
